SPRINGBREAK
“Don’t go to Mexico,” so the news tells its rapt audience. All I have to say is that my impoverished self never took a spring break during college, but I think what happens is something to avoid: neon necklaces, Forever 21 costumes, bro “creeping” and serial binge drinking of sugary concoctions laced with roofies. What civilization. On second thought, go have fun, kiddos. I think this might be an important rite of passage for you. I am a drip.
RPS
Maybe something I miss most about Philly was this organization: Competitive rock, paper, scissors. For a brief period of time, I finely honed my talent for the sport. It’s a cocktail of wit, instinct, chance and PBR-fueled BAC.
My moniker was Fiber Glass Forest. I can explain:
In 2006, I had made friends with a few waitresses at the Irish Pub, where I too was employed. Lillian, one of said friends, signed me up for my first rps game before I arrived at the bar (I think at Tritone on South? Across from Bob & Barbara’s). One of the stipulations of participating in rps is choosing a player name. Since I was running late to the event, Lill chose Fiber Glass Forest, or FGF, due to the state of my apartment which at the time I had recently turned into a … fiberglass forest. I’ll break it down further: I was a film student and it was part of my set. I bought sheets of fiberglass at the Home Depot and constructed trees in a way that I don’t think I can find words for because it’s just too ridiculous, but my heart was in the right place.
The name stuck and I am forever known in RPS circles as FGF. Ah the times of our lives… I’m now up for honorary membership into the Hall of Fame. That’s why I brought it up. It is a skill, it is!
FUNSHOW
My roommates took me to see this show on Thursday downtown off of “chicken alley.” It was a very nice place indeed, and three bands played: Lonnie Walker of N.C., (I forget the name of the other band, Powers something?) and Philly’s Grandchildren. Holy shit. Holy shit. Grandchildren were off the chain, as was Lonnie Walker. I couldn’t recommend either band more, please find yourself in their presence if you get the chance.
FUTUREFUNSHOW
Maybe fun isn’t the obvious adjective, but I just reserved my spots at the upcoming Tim Hecker show at the Bebe Theater, a super small place that is going to just swell up and burst – it’s going to be so good. Get you some tickets if there are some left.
That’s all for now.
Edit: OKSOLASTNIGHT
I would start a whole new post for this, but it seems to fit in this vein so I’m just popping this in: Last night at the Orange Peel was a most excellent show featuring Rodrigo y Gabriela. When asked later at the Vault what they sounded like: “Kind of like flamenco metal.” The band is just two people on guitars, like incredibly talented guitarists and the result was huge, full sound.
The latter half of the duo captured the audience with her expletive laden interludes; “fuck, fucking, fucked:” her words of choice but it sounded so cute with her accent. And Metallica, oh the Metallica cover songs – epic. You should see them live, they promised they’d return soon enough. One of the best shows I’ve seen all year.
Now I am done.
