starting over

I’ve decided to upgrade this account – pretty meh. It’s been one full year, which is hard to believe! A lot has transpired: I’ve changed jobs, changed where I live, learned a lot of new skills and changed my career goals – somewhat. I want this site to reflect how I am now so therein lies my new project.

I work best under deadline. I give myself until April 21 (dad’s bday).

Back for more

I haven’t posted in a long time. I will this weekend. Besides this one. This one doesn’t count.

I have news.

Make videos look nice on the iPad: a guide from MediaStorm

Edit: I did a bad thing (by accident) and copied MediaStorm’s page to my blog. Though I did credit the original authors extensively, it’s not cool with MediaStorm and I totally understand and love MediaStorm’s site so I took my first post down (hence this Ed Note).

And so, if you are interested in a very comprehensive and awesome guide to video compression for the iPad and such, use the MediaStorm link. Sorry for any confusion.

Training Dayz: Getting grown in Final Cut Pro

Editing video, what a wonderful thing. Since I officially began my “cinema” studies back in 2004, editing was definitely a major draw for me. Shooting, set design, pre-production are all cool – but ultimately, I think like an editor: What I will need to cut out, how the audio will need to be trimmed, taking shots from angles that can be edited together later, etc…

For all the thought I give editing, I figure I should probably brush up on it. Every now and then I realize I suck at it: Constantly searching for troubleshooting or shortcuts. Watching tutorials. Texting someone a question. Or someone at work will ask me a question and then I struggle and mumble a bit to find the words to describe how to fix their issue with FCP. It’s one of those things when you know if you could just sit down and tool around with it, the problem would be nixed. But that’s not really the best route to knowledge for the other person. Or you for that matter.

My point is that I am getting Apple Certified in Final Cut Pro. I’m taking the practice exam online and realizing some simple shortcuts to things I’ve been doing the hard way. Also finding out about things I completely never learned in the six years I’ve been using this program. Opps.

I am growing up. At last.

I try to use my brain for good stuff

Dull. Meh. Itchy. These are the words to describe how I feel about my media skillz right now and the mosquito bites covering my bod.

I feel like I get stuck in a mental rut sometimes and need new things to stay motivated. I usually am pretty good at getting motivated by other people’s work and then I look at my equipment and just sigh…

To be fair, I’m finally put my Dreamweaver to work by learning Javascript on lynda.com. I just ordered a new shotgun mic and camera light. I picked up a bartending job on the weekends and am saving my pennies for my own 7D (and in my imagination, several lenses). And I have just ordered a new program called Soundslides, an audio slide show program (which I’ve done before using Brightcove – used to be the only format our website could host) but still I’m interested to see what I’ll do with this new one.

Lots of ideas. Little time. I am currently editing audio for is an ongoing enterprise project on the subject of *dying* which will include video, photos, audio, some graphics, a blog … a photog here has about 400 photos for me to sift through from an interview we did at a funeral home so I’ll be doing that all summer.

That’s work stuff though. I need a side project like whuut. I started the drums and bass but I mean like, a non-let’s drink PBR and make noize project.

Let’s see, I started to write a weekly screenplay based on our dogs’ antics. That was fun but then I realized I had become one of those pathetic people that obsess over their beloved animals. Drats! Sidenote: I also have several nicknames for my dog, one of which I came up with today at Sonic with my friend, Shawn. “Monkay” is the definitive, Gawd-given name of my dog but he also goes by: Monk, Monken, Dunkin, Dudley, Dunks, Duds, Dudnut, Dunkey, Monkster and the new name du jour is Mo. Or Moh. Can’t decide. Am I pathetic, yes I am! My personal fave is Dunkin Dudnut or just Duddds!!

It’s Friday, sorry I am all over the place. I just wanted a reminder that I am making progress as an individual. Not sure this did the trick, but at least I tried. Have a good weekend!
